In addition to my other finds the other day I found a rectangular piece of with a square loop sticking out that appeared to be brass or bronze. Wasn't sure what it was until I went back to the area yesterday and came up with a buckle. Turns out they fit together. It's a Horstmann pre WW I USN Officers Belt Buckle. It's numbered 221. There seem to be two varieties of this buckle, one with the eagle facing up and the one like mine with the eagle facing to the side. From what I could find online they appear to have been made between 1860 and 1917 and I understand one like mine is pictured in the 1876 catalog. They are actually called a "false two piece buckle" although I'm not sure what the false is about. Doesn't appear to be very valuable, but a fun find.

Great buckle Don--congrats on finding the whole thing...it looks like it's in really nice condition too! :icon_thumleft:

That's a beautiful display piece, and an example of a buckle that I have never dug. Great that you got both pieces!

Cheers,

Buck
