If your ears can't tell I don't think the detector will know the answer.

Hunt lots! It will get much better.

When you are hunting in any pattern there will be certain areas blacked out mostly the bottom 1/3 of the screen. This blacked out area is where the unwanted items like iron, foil, and aluminum hit on the screen. When hunting in Conduct Mode and you get a signal that is iffy or semi nulling, you switch over to Quickmask to hear what is causing the nulling, iffy signal, but your Quickmask has to be set more open than your normal hunting pattern to hear what is causing the iffy. Quickmask screen is set from line 1 to line 35, with line 35 at the bottom (all white screen), this setting at 35 must be used with a very short stroke no more than three inches to check the iffy signal then you go back to your hunting pattern so you can use your normal swinging width, I set my at quickmask at 30, it's a personal thing and if it’s still nulling, or iffy at 30 I move on. Now if your hunting in Ferrous, that’s a whole different way to hunt because the high Ferrous tones on the E-Trac are more like mid tones compared to high Conduct tones. but I bet you the future E-Trac II will have the ferrous high tone to match the conduct tone. My quick explanation is I never found a coin with a ferrous number of 30 or below ferrous line 30. So on the iffy ones you just have to open up quickmask set at 28 or lower down the screen (35) and look at the to see where it hits or switch over to ferrous mode then all small iron will be low tone and everything else will be mid tones and low mid tones... Happy trails 2 you

I keep Quickmask wide open. Every once in a while I'll switch from the discrimination pattern to quickmask to check out iffy signals. Often the numbers jump all over the place and aren't much help. I have dug silver coins where the numbers in quickmask were bouncing down to 34 and 35 on the ferrous scale. As a matter of fact, check out this video of my first hunt of 2010 on January 23rd. I dug two silver dimes. Pay attention to the signal and the numbers on the second dime. You'll see the ferrous number bounce down to 35. But it sounded good so I dug it anyway and got a Merc.

Sometimes quickmask will help you decide whether or not to dig. But rely on the sound. If it sounds good, dig.
