I took my F4 to the local beach and it performed very well on the dry sand.
No jewelry, but lots of stuff for an hour or so? :-)
Did you use the F4 on the wet sand? If you did, how did it perform? Give us ALL the info!

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Yes, but I knew in advance it would not work on Wet Salt Sand.
It takes a dual or multi frequency detector to handle wet salt sand- like the Sovereign, DFX, Beach Hunter ID, CZ's { or of course pulse induction detectors }.
A single frequency detector sees wet salt sand as a conductive target.

Looks likes ya had fun and made a little money! Great hobby huh? ;D

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

OH YA!
I love it! :icon_sunny:
It is equal to Flyfishing on a mountain stream for me.
I love both and both give S~T~R~E~S~S a break for a while. :tard:
Of course, there are no mountain streams here in SW Florida, so, it's a good thing I love metal detecting too!!! ::)

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Hey Chuck!
You and the F4 are a good duet! :)
I want to see gold and silver my friend!
You've got some of the tools; where is the CZ?
Also, where is the sun screen; you're looking a little well done there! :)

Hi GRB! :-)
Well, i'm gold huntin', just not gold findin' so far! :-)
As to the CZ-20 that I just got back, I took that out this afternoon at 3pm for the afternoon low tide and got this- the earring is junk-like the rest! :-)

You may have known but did you actually try? The reason I'm persistent is that I have a Bounty Hunter Land Star. Before that I had a Discovery 3300 which, as you may know, is a close relative of the F4, almost identical. Before I got the 3300 I had a BH Sharp Shooter II. I didn't get to use the SSII because when I bought it I didn't pay attention to the SSII not having a depth gage since the photos made it look like it had and when I picked it up from the seller that's when I noticed it didn't have a depth gage and I had to have one so I had to sell it.

Prior to getting the 3300 I was desiring a Land Star but I didn't want to spend between $250+ and $400Reading and the 3300 was available for less than $200 and it was "high tech." I had problems with it and sold it, finally getting the Land Star.

What am I leading up to? The F4 like the Land Star has a Ground Balance knob, seems to be a rare thing these days. I had read a review of the Land Star where the reviewer went to the beach and was able to hunt on the wet sand because the GB knob allowed him to tune the machine to the wet sand. I thought that since the F4 also has a GB knob you'd be able to also tune your F4 to the wet sand.

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Good job Chuck, hey I think I know where that spot is... ;D ;D ;D

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Yes, I actually tried. I tried to GB, but it was impossible. I ran the coil over the wet salt sand and it falsed constantly. I raised the disc and cut the sensitivity, buried my test gold ring and test nickle [which I put in a film canister, filled with the wet salt sand, buried it 4" deep or less and tried the F4. It would not hit them, but it did false hit constantly, as all single frequency detectors do on WET SALT SAND.
Yes, a GB helps, but it can not balance out the conductive wet salt sand.
I have tried just about every metal detector made through the years and NONE of the single frequency detectors can handle wet salt sand. { The MXT comes close though! In fact, it's useable, just no depth in wet salt sand.} Now, freash water beach sand is different. You can GB in that and hunt.

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Chuck, I am so very thrilled for you... your doing mighty fine and your smiles show it.... keep on digging and keep on showing us...we love it..as you know...lol...

Hey Bill! :-)
Ya, I think you do too! South end of Englewood Beach! :-)
If only we had "Gold Toten'" tourists here!
But, we have wiser locals and snowbirds-they know enough to leave their jewely at home! :-(

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. I used my Land Star in Coney Island beach a couple of weeks ago and it didn't misbehave. I was hoping it would have been the same for the F4 because when I win the one being given my Lost Treasure I was going to get rid of the Land Star. But, I guess the LS is a keeper and I'll sell the F4. :icon_jokercolor:

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Silver Fox,
So! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS GOING TO WIN THAT LT DETECTOR! Good plan! :icon_scratch:
If the Land Star works on that beach, then all metal detectors probably will.
I owned a landstar when it first came out and as you know, it is a simplistic metal detector, nothing like the high end machines in the "near $1000.00 range"
Is Coney Island on the ocean or is it on a bay etc?
It is wet salt sand that a detector sees as a conductive target.
I guarantee you couldn't hunt Florida's wet salt sand with it, or any other single frequency unit, with any degree of success.
Hey, if it works, use it.
Just for a comparison though, a detector designed to work wet salt sand- say an Excalibur, will hit a nickle at about 10" deep. An MXT will nearly handle wet salt sand, but will only hit the nickle at 4-5"
1 good gold ring 3-5"" deeper than your LS will go, could pay for a detector designed to do the job properly [multi or dual frequency detectors]?

Yeah, I'm waiting for the congratulations notification from LT and that it's on its way. ;D

Coney Island is on the Atlantic Ocean, here's the 1930s photo that I just posted a few days ago: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,154622.0.html

I read the 2 articles you supplied the link to. Interesting for newbies but my experience with single-frequency detectors at the beach for many years leaves me satisfied that while a multi-frequency Minelab or P.I. is preferable, one can do alright with a decent machine. The reasons I decided on a Land Star was minimal cost and the fact that the LS has a GB knob. I had read a review of the LS and the reviewer said that the at the beach, on the wet sand, the GB control allowed the reviewer to use the machine without instability.

But I used 2 VLF machines on the beach starting in 1979 and working in DISC I accumulated quite an amount of gold rings, bling, etc. Perhaps I may have missed deep targets but I got enough shallow targets without problems to satisfy anyone. You tell me after you look at this photo of L.A. beaches finds. My favorite ring is the 14K ring with the star saphire, 2nd row from top near the middle. Pure joy!

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

Hmmmmm, well, you got the goods to prove it's possible to find goodies on the beach with a single frequency VLF- I can't deny that! From that picture, did every one of those come from wet salt sand, or some from the dry too?
I started detecting in 1976, but not in salt water.
On my SW Florida salt beach, the single freq detectors don't work. I've tried many dozens of them-it requires multi frequency.
Coney Island is where my parents went for their honeymoon in 1947. :-)
I was born in 1948, so I guess Coney Island brought them bad luck! :icon_jokercolor: :icon_scratch: ??? ;D
Hope it does better by you!
This hobby is all about having fun! You appear to be having fun and your equipment works for you. That's all that matters. ::)
I STILL SAY SINGLE FREQUENCY DETECTORS DON'T WORK IN WET SALT SAND! LOL LOL :tongue3: Sorry, I can't help myself sometimes! :boxing:

Yep, all from wet sand. I never did dry land in L.A. I would usually walk from the pier at Santa Monica down the water's edge to the end of Venice Beach :stop: and back. Of course, there were many days when I didn't find anything. >:( But who cared with all of the ogling time I got in! 8)

Re: Used my new Fisher F-4 on the beach yesterday-here's what I got :-)

well here in florida I use my ace 250 running only 2 to 3 bars of sen on wet sand ---used to turn down the power/ sen and up the disc with my old bounty hunters -- (while not the best choice availible it works) maybe not super deep but it can find some stuff in wet sand --provided its not too deep --see crackbadgers vids -- he hits the wet sand with the 250 and water even --- and gets the goods -- while there are better ones out there than the 250 I'm sure (gor a much higher price) --for my mere $225--- I very happy with my Ace 250 and its 6 to 8 in abilities
