Just thought I'd post this... having had this thought a bunch of times. I see a lot of post where people are scanning their coins, relics whatever to post here. I use a Nikon coolpix 950... it was my first digital camera... thought about selling it a few times since I now have 4 others but I paid sooo much for it new I just can't!! anyway, at 2.1 meg.. light weight and with the lens section able to rotate it is the best camera for taking pics of coins and relics! They can be picked up off ebay for as little as $50 to $75 and are a much better way to go the a scanner.. i use it to shoot all my stuff.. from Civil War buckles and buttons to coins... dropping the resolution down a little is perfect for posting.. very little post processing and with a small tripod, i use a little one form Eddie Bauer.. it works great in macro mode. I tried my scanner... but one scratch in the glass and it is over!! and the 950 is way cheaper then a good scanner.. to put is in perspective.. i have a CoolPix 8700, a D70 and a D200 with a great macro lens.. and I still use the little 950 almost all of the time.. even drop it in a ziplock bag to take out in the field with me.. and it uses normal AA batteries.. so if people are looking for a camera for posting on t-net.. or the web in general..I would really suggest this one.. I have been using it a lot for years with no problems..

Just a thought.. after seeing another post with a scanned image of a large cent. thinking about the damage it could do to the scanner..

if anyone as any questions.. shoot!! ;-) I'd be glad to share my thoughts.. and my setup..

Thanks,

O.K. , .. Monkeyboy , I'd have to agree with ya , selling your older stuff that is , I also have a hard time doing it , I'll sooner give it to freands or family , done given a few detectors away , ..never sold one .
And for some here on T-net using there phones for there in-situ pic's ,... Aggggggh !! I have a cheap lit' camera , a Sony cyber-shot 7.2 m.p. [$ 150 ? ] , it doesn't take much to get some great pic's these day's !!
The only disagreement I would have is about the "pic's " of the artifact's done with the sanners ,... I love 'em !! For a time I was a bit jealous of Cannon Man's pic's of his flint on the A.I.A. board here at T-Net , they look great ! The color and the detail of his flint artifact's ,just floating there in black space , incredible ! Anyway , one day the subject of taken pic's of artifacts came up on the A.I.A. board , and Cannon Man shinned in with " Taken pic's of artifact's is a bit of a art form , .. using a sanner is more like Monkey business " [ hope no offence taken ,.. Monkey boy !!] . So his "big secret" of leaving the lid "up" while making his pic's was revealed ,.. to me anyway :tard: ! I havn't given it a try yet , but when I do , I'll heed your advice about scratch'n the glass on the scanner and try using a piece of plexi-glass over it .

thanks , Blindpig

I use cameras and I have a couple of scanners. One reason I don't mind using the scanner is that I pick them up at the flea market for 5 bucks. They are usually missing the software but drivers are easy to find on the net. At 5 bucks it is cheaper than the camera.

That, is a darn good point!! ;-) Now that I think about it.. at out last community yardsale.. there were some scanners left at the end of the day that just went to the roadside as freebies.. see.. isn't T-net great!! No matter what the subject.. always something to learn!!
