Been researching a location that I've suspected to be a Revolutionary War camp off and on over the winter, Saturday gave me the 1st opportunity to get out to the field first hand. I only had a small window of time to hunt on Saturday, (House work and my mother being in the hospital) I maybe got 2.5 hours of actual swing and dig time, but was a good 25 minute walk each way to and from this field. Very Hostile territory I may add, filled with thorn bushes and ticks. The only good thing I can say about this place was that it was relatively trash free, only 1 bottle cap and 1 .308 casing were the only trash pieces all day. But the field was rather quiet.
Started swinging in the Northeast section of the field, was quiet except for the occasional pig iron horseshoe or nail. As I made my way more east I got a solid and consistent 60 on my White VX3 at 4". Dug out my divot, this lack of rain up until today the dirt was dry and broke apart very easily. Scouted through my busted up dirt pile with the garret pinpointer and discovered my 1st Musket Ball ever. White patina, mold seam, and roughly about .59" I think this could be a brown bess ball. My measurements are eyeballed from measuring it with a ruler, I plan on getting it on a nice high grade jewelers caliper tomorrow. I was quite happy to have my 1st Musket Ball, this was helping me confirm that I was at the right spot, at least in my mind anyway.
Concentrated on that area for awhile and only dug up some more occasional pig iron pieces and what looked like slag. Started to make my way back north when I got a scattered 19 - 24 at 3.5" Dug it out, and right on top of the dry pile of dirt was the back of a button, no shank. Flipped it over and saw the encrusted entwined USA and BOOM! I was happy dancing all over that field. Made a quick phone call to my wife to tell her about it. She knows I've been swinging all over gods creation and talking about this site for the past 4 months. Swung over that area for another 45 minutes before I started to make my way out of the field. This field is rather large and I know I have several more days of swinging it, this should be my go to spot for the next 4 or 5 weekends over the summer.
