Welcome to TreasureNet!

Your find appears to be a New York State militia staff button of the mid 1800's.

The word at the bottom of the button, Excelsior, is the state motto. It is Latin for, "Ever upward!"

Similar buttons were worn by New York soldiers in the American Civil War, 1861-1865.

It would be interesting to know how such a button came to Poland.

Can you post a photo of the back of the button?

Thanks for the new photo!

The backmark tells us that this is a postwar button, made sometime after 1870.

It was made for the State of New York by the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut.

Although not as rare or valuable as a Civil War period button, it is still a very nice find.

The button is worth $6 to $8, U.S.
