Metal detecting tourists from the US are paying thousands of pounds to join treasure hunting tours in Britain in the search for ancient artefacts.

Hundreds of detectorists are flocking the UK every year to take part in organised group trips led by specialist operators in an industry fuelled by Instagram.

Posts on social media of Roman coins and medieval artefacts attract hundreds of likes on social media and have helped provide a surge in visitor numbers scouring the country's muddy fields and beaches.

The BBC comedy series Detectorists, starring Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones, and reports of huge finds like the 14,865 coin Hoxne Hoard has also helped drive the popularity of metal detecting.

Come on over, I have 80 acres and a river here that needs sweeping :)

Seed a field and keep them coming, could make lots of $

There have been rumors of field seeding for awhile now. I saw a load of stuff one person I know brought back, not impressed. I, on the other hand, am going mudlarking on the Thames sometime this year with a guide and that will NOT be seeded. Also might not get much, but that's the risk.

Brilliant, you will love it. Hope that you get to find the mysterious garnets as well that show up every so often. Looking forward to seeing your finds :)

Organicseekers, I haven't finalized a date. But have my permit coming, all the tide tables, maps, etc. Plus I have a guide and they know what they're doing and will remain nameless. I have a few of the garnets that I purchased. I figured I probably wouldn't find any, and they were very inexpensive.

Come on folks, Brexit is kicking their butt, any American dumb enough to go pay is a fool an does not need their money anymore than all them folks who come to the US for shooting and tactical training, and whats the other one called, Freedom.

P.T. Barnum is alive and well! (Man, I loved that guy!)

#TheFlagrantStupidDontDeserveMoney

and anything they find of value the UK will yell TREASURE TROVE and they get nada....

Yes, "treasure trove" is a possibility any day. I wound not go to any of the organized digs. You figure it's like some of the digs here, same fields, different folks, different days.

Note of things needed.

1. A very large field with lots of cows.
2. Metal detector and gear rental.
3. Concession stand in middle of cows.
4. large barn converted to a bed and breakfast... with nightclub complete with disco ball and several vertical mounted 2 inch brass poles.
5. and last but not least... huge amounts of old coins that value no more than 10 bucks... errr pounds.

:P

Seems that the locals have been throwing beer bottle tops all over the place as well !

If they are that wealthy they could buy any thing they wanted Like a exotic animal hunt seeded

No different than many of the hunts in states. It's a metal detecting vacation is all. I want fault any one who goes, it's their right, money and their time.

When I began taking average Joe's gold prospecting in the Arizona desert for a fee, I was considered a pariah by the other gold prospectors in the area. I was accused of "mining the miners," which was in fact my carefully thought out business plan. Metal detecting as a hobby is generally a money losing proposition, just like weekend gold prospecting. My school ended up teaching a few thousand greenhorns the basics of placer gold mining and prospecting. These "students" included hundreds of Europeans, and Asians. People spend their hard-earned money on a lot of things that may seem stupid or ill-advised to you and me, but to them it's a bucket lister, or just something they have wanted since they can remember.

If you are smart enough to make your hobby into a money making business, then my hat is off to you. If you think ANYBODY can do it, why haven't you tried? A "treasure hunting" business costs a lot of money to run and insure - I had 20- Minelab GPX-5000 machines, 15- Tesoro Lobo Super Traqs, 12- Chilcott Drywashers, 12- Goldbuddy Highbankers, and another $6,000.00 in assorted equipment at the height of my operation, with four crews taking students out daily during the season. Liability insurance? $10,000.00 per season.

If you can afford to live your dream - DO IT!

If you can't - keep working at it till you can. :occasion14:

Two of those three guys shown on a tour, have YouTube channels that feature metal detecting ('Business Trip"?) :laughing7:

Like everyone said! Organicseekers, my dad brought home three Roman lamps from WWII! I still have them. Apparently a bomb burst and caved in and also exposed an underground tunnel. I remember him telling me there were these huge jars everywhere, plus the lamps.

Thanks, I'm living my dream right now - still..., it took me most of my life to do it, but now that I'm fully retired, I play archaeologist, and get paid to do it..!
I sometimes work with professionals that are decades younger than I am, but we talk the same language, do what we love, and are skilled doing it - looking for old stuff...!
