I found a US Great Seal Button today in New Bern NC. The front appears to be from after 1902 but the back seal is SCOVILL MF'G Co WATERBURY which dates from 1850-1865. It is about 30mm and in great shape. I think the picture is too big because it will not load. Can anybody help identify this button? Did they reuse the back of civil war buttons to use in WW1? Thank you for any help.

I have asked myself the same question. All Great Seal buttons are post 1902. Keep in mind that using Scovill backmark lettering (including dots and stars) is not a foolproof method because Scovill often used old backmark dies to make newer buttons. Thus it is possible to have a World War I "Great Seal" button with an 1850 backmark. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,212590.msg1863714.html#msg1863714

Also the dots, stars or name in groove could be the determining date factor. We need a picture of your backmark. http://inkspotantiques.com/shop/index.php?main_page=page&id=1

I hope the picture will attach now. It has 2 stars. I was reading that the us great seal was used from 1902 to the present. Could this be a button from the last few decades? Thanks for your help.
