Your find is the insignia from a US Model-1874 bayonet scabbard frog. The "draped web" background around the raised US is a key ID-clue. Also, the odd-looking attachment form on the back... most notably, the disc with a square hole which fit onto a square-topped cylindrical post. Compare yours with the photos below.

Great ID, I didn't catch the attachment method. Guess I need to look better or upgrade my readers to a stronger version, before I open my mouth per se.
