US Civil War Buckle!! In Central New York!!!

Today I got out to a site that had 3 old foundations. I searched for a few hours and didn't find anything interesting, so I decided to try a smaller area on the side of one foundation that I hadn't searched yet before leaving. I got a loud high tone and I thought it was a can or something but it sounded pretty good. I pulled an oval shaped object out of the hole and immediately saw the US and realized what I had. My first Civil War box plate!!! It has the arrow hooks on the back and is in pretty good shape, but I think I may have nicked the left side with my shovel :sad10:. I was really surprised to find this given the fact I was hunting in central New York! Maybe the person who lived here fought in the Civil War... It almost looks like someone stabbed the back of this a few times with a knife..you can see some puncture marks or something...

I took pictures of the foundations but for some reason they didn't come out on my phone. I'll try and get some pics of the site next time I'm there.

Great find!!
I try to dig just about everything.. you never know!!
I found some of my best stuff and just to think I almost passed them up.

I'm far from an expert on civil war relics, but from all the ones I've seen posted the attachments on the back of yours indicate it is a belt plate rather than a cartridge box plate. outstanding find. congrats!

Congratulations on the Union Army Belt Buckle! The puncture marks on the reverse could be casting defects, but that is one beautiful artifact. Sub

Very nice union belt buckle. I love it. Congratulations buddy.

Very nice find in Hamilton county, when I am in my NY home I am in Washington county and will be doing some Revolutionay war detecting when I get home.

Nice!! i live in Clifton Park! Currently away at college in Hamilton NY. let me know if you ever want to do some hunting.

Yeah, these belt plates are commonly referred to as the "Arrowhead Hook" style. I found one identical to it in Tennessee. Congradulations.
