I believe that's a nice early infantry button. 1812-1815? Are there 14 stars and is it 16 mm? That is a HELL OF A FIND! Hopefully someone smarter than me will chime in lol

Abe - 14 stars and 16mm. You nailed it. I gotta look this up!

incredible find congrats!

Better pic. Question - if this is pewter does peroxide work or is lemon juice a better option. I can see a bit of gilt just under the grime, so I'm thinking the lemon juice is the one? Thanks for any help.

Wait for someone else to answer but I don't think either of this is a viable option for that beauty. Give me a minute to think here and I will get back to you bud

Thanks man. This thing is actually quite a looker in person. Much better than the pic. The "U S" is so friggin clear it's outrageous and all the stars are well defined. Don't you love how you can stick a "whatever" in the case, then come home and find it all over again when you realize what it is?

That is an absolute beauty my friend and one I've never seen. Is it actually pewter? I don't want to question you but I believe it may be cast brass with gold gilt? If it is then you have a tough decision to make. I use naval jelly on gold gilt but you have to be very very careful. If it looks great I would leave it the hell alone.... And it looks great to me so it prob looks really good in person

These tips were written by Buckleboy so you can bet they work

If it's guilt I'm pretty sure its not puter that's a beauty please don't clean it with anything

I think you're right on the material. I was questioning that it's pewter, but thought it was because the William Leigh button site had a pic that seemed like it MIGHT be this button. If it's not, I can't find it anywhere. It seems to thin to be pewter, as I thought those are typically thicker? This button looks like brass with gilt. NEW Army; 1-piece pewter. Eagle with "US' in an oval below. Shows usage, but solid. Shank is professionally restored. 16mm

Oh and Abe thanks a ton for Buckleboy's cleaning tips. That is an awesome resource, as is he.

That button looks great like it is. I don't think I'd clean it any more. True it might improve. But it might also get much worse. I don't think it's worth taking the chance.

GREAT find there! That's not one I see posted very often at all.

Best Wishes,

Buck

Incredible button! Congrats!

I'm glad Buck chimed in. I think he's right and you've got a real beauty there that you should prob not mess with. That is a great piece of history and you'd be very upset if you screwed that one up. I think it's early 1800s

Nice button. Congrats.

If you look at general service buttons around 1812 you can see that style of thin "U.S."

Nice digs. Nice patina on it I would leave it like it is, nice save.
