Hmm... I don't know the application, but the drooped neck of the eagle would (I believe) suggest a Marine Corp. reference... but I can't say that I've seen a military piece quite like it. ???

Good point about the eagle Benz. This thing looks like an insert that went on something to me, and will probably be darn hard to identify unless someone actually stumbles over the whole object it belonged to.

Could this have been maybe from a 2 piece button and the rest disintegrated ?
Just taking a stab at the possibilities....

I sure hope someone has seen something like this before.

Seriously doubt it has anything to do with a button Bob. It seems to be an embem, possibly inserted, maybe glued as there seems to be no solder residue.

I know if ever I was going to build an engine though, I'd jazz it up with some fancy freeze plugs that looked like that thing! :laughing7:

Off a piece of leather horse tack? Monty.

I would say the US entering WW1 in December 1917 would be the only reason for 1917 appearing on anything button like in the US that year.

I always hate bringing a thread from the dead however I noticed that the OP was still active and that the answer had never been given. I believe the following is what you found. If you still have it you might try opening it and seeing who's picture might be inside.
