Upset...

A month back I found my first blow hole button, from the late 1600's. Anyways, Today when I opened my display case to put more buttons in I noticed that the front fell off and broke into a couple pieces. Anyways, I was pretty upset about that. Anyone else had an experience like that?

I've had two different CW eagle buttons crumble on me before I got them home. Makes you sick. At least you had the joy of finding it, and hopefully some good pics. I'd display the remains with a good picture. Sorry for your loss.

Placed a nice RR button on the bumper of my pickup after brushing it off and after putting my detector and stuff in the back drove off and about a mile down the road remembered I left it sitting on the bumper.Drove back and never found it.

Yes. I have had buttons fall apart and iron delaminate in electrolysis . When hunting artifacts and get bone tools they use the heated "toxic" fumes from super glue under a glass. I wonder if it would work on toasted relics?

I have had plenty of crumbs in my display cases when getting them out after a long sit. Getting the artifacts out of the ground is the easy part, conserving them for the long haul is a lot harder. If it's not brass,silver ,gold or glass then some more regular observation may always be in order. And remember, rust never sleeps. It does make you sick to your stomach though, I feel your pain

Ouch! At least it was not a civil war belt plate. Probably fell off your car farther down the road.

Yup. Actually watched buttons deteriorate almost immediately after being exposed and drying.
If able, pack 'em in same dirt and let 'em dry slowly.

Put the remains in a bag, Luckly I still have a before photo. The back survived fine but the front broke into one big piece and two smaller pieces.

I will try to get photos up soon.
