updated/"26" button has been analyzed by expert....

(Turns out it's a repro, I was advised by button expert Don Troiani, who has written books on the subject. I figured the string attached was too new looking; however, we did pull three very nice large cents out of the same spot, all with nice green patenas and readable dates of 1803 and 1805 and one no date. There were lots of reenactments at this old site, so it explains the button.)

Here's a better photo of yesterday's finds. Still cleaning today's. It's possible the button is from a reenactor. I am having it professionally evaluated by top button expert who wrote a highly regarded book on Rev. War buttons. Seems this much twine would be tough to stay on for 230 years, but it is possible.

Nice finds Bergie.

Those types of finds don't come in abundance.

But when you get them there well worth the time spent.

I don't know but I'd like to think that finding the button and cent in the same area makes me believe that the button could be authentic. Great stuff anyway!
Happy Hunting. Dan
