Happy holidays...I had posted the attached engraved canteen and several of you provided helpful information. I just received this French note back from the Savenay historical group - which I translated online from French to English. Very cool that they identified the metal shop and sent a photo where it was likely made by a recovering soldier for a member of the hospital staff. Unclear if the initials are from the maker or the recipient. Great to have this additional info!

In response to the request, it is not possible for us to identify the owner of this object since more than 82,000 sick and wounded and a very large number of doctors, nurses lived in Savenay from 1917 to 1919. This highly worked metal gourd bearing a caduceus was intended for a medical staff of this very important hospital (the largest in Europe according to Colonel Cooper, its director). This beautiful work was certainly carried out at the metal workshop for rehabilitation (photo) by a convalescent and received by a hospital caregiver.

I don't translate! Have a great end of the year.
