After talking to a friend about this key and showing a picture of it to him I got a message on my machine and a lead from his mom about a key very much like mine that she had aquired years ago in Maine. The lead was that it looked like a steamship key from long ago. My friend took it upon himself to do a little research himself and right away came up with a lead to the Fall River Steamship Line. These ships ran a route from NY to Newport and on to Fall River where passangers would board a train for the final leg into Boston. These ships were Popular before the Cape Cod Canal opened in 1916 allowing direct passage to Boston. There were 4 ships which ran through the early mourning/night hours facilitating workers to travel to and from NY and Boston.
The SS Plymouth was one of the boats and I have found pictures of keys from not only the Plymouth but also the Pricilla another of the Fall River LIne.
Hers a picture of the Plymouth and another of the key I found. Enjoy!!

Gotta love the fact the steam ships put their name on the keys. Well I suppose I should say the people who owned the ships.

Great story. What an awesome way to travel. Great find and research. Thanks for sharing.

What a great story and pic to go along with that handsome key! I would travel on a steamship like that anytime (and seems a lot better than the problematic Carnival Cruise lines of today, lol) ;)

Wonderful! It's so great when you can connect the dots like that.

Congrats on the research coming together and a great key you have found there...be nice to frame it and the photo of the ship.

Cool key! I have some more "modern" skeleton keys but I'd love to find something like that.

The stuff from the old ocean liners are usually pretty collectable. Love the key.

Congrats.
