The round object is a carpet bag lock. I just found a picture of one. See the picture at the end called lock8.jpg.

I went out for a quick one hour hunt at a local state park that I have permission to hunt. (email the state with a nice letter and you will get a response ;D) So I hunted for an hour before I had to run some errands. This spot is in the woods not far from the highway. It just looked right. I found what appear to be an area that was used by farmers and perhaps livestock. These items were all in an area about 200 x 200 feet. Some stone walled field systems and paths are in the area as well as the remains of a foot bridge across the brook about 600 feet away. Not bad for a quick survey.

So, what do you think the buckle/latch is? The chape of the buckle says 'PYB' on it along with some other lettering that I can't quite make out. I'm guessing it came off of a box of some sort late 1800's? The other round piece seems to have leather on one side of it, horse tack??? And what about the small pointed thing? Is this a piece of a scabbard or am I just hoping ;D This quick visit makes me think it is worth a better hunt when I have more time. Lots of stuff =lots of activity and maybe some large coppers waiting in the winds 8) Thanks for looking I thought you may enjoy the finds.

Pic 1 could be part of a catch or latch for a valise or carpet bag.

Thanks DCMATT that is a good thought. It seems like the contents of a house was spread out all around this area. I need to go back for another hunt.

Re: Odd buckle and other brass parts???

I suspect the "pointy thing" is a belt tip. Might be from horse tack or a fancy man's belt.

Pic #3 in the upper left looks similar to a CW Union Artillery horse rosette I found in my area. Any CW activity in your spot?

The big buckle almost has a colonial look to it. It's in very good shape!

Never know where the colonial stuff will pop up. I found a turn of the 19th century shoe buckle in late 1800's/early 1900's church camp meeting grounds. Also a large cent that predated the camp by 25 years. Research told me it was just woods prior to the camp - but lots of history in the area. I'm sure it's the same with your spot. Get back out there!

Hi DCMatt there was really no CW activity in my area but... NH had many soldiers that fought in the Civil War so they did camp as they traveled South. I was kinda thinking rosette too but the little squarish hole in the front made me wonder. Like you say, you never know maybe I'll find a nice large copper in there next time out.
