I went metal detecting this morning and detected this cross it said it was a nickle it has 19 diamond looking stones in it and it looks like gold it was like 4" in the ground,it is heavy but i dont c no markings on it like a rings Karts. How do I tell if its reel gold. I put this quarter next to it to tell how big it is.

Re: Is this real gold

Looks to me like this is a custom made piece and it should be gold and diamonds the diamonds appear to be mine cut that would place the age of the piece around 100 years old.

Re: Is this real gold

Look on the Clasp!

Sides, Between the Markings.

Looks good, could be Rolled, Plated. But Looks good.

Give it the what for again.

:P

Re: Is this real gold

I would advise you to take it to two different jewelers , they won't charge much to acid test it
this is only if you aren't close friends with a jeweler in your area - so they don't try to take,
advantage of you . The piece looks rather good to me - Argentium.

Re: Is this real gold

Okay, you MUST promise us that after you take it to a jeweler you will post their response here. It looks really good to me. Another way to find out would be to stop by a pawn shop and ask them to test one of the stones. If the stone tests as a diamond, it is most certainly gold, and a nice size chunk at that.

AND DON'T FORGET TO TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND OUT!!!

Re: Is this real gold

I handle a lot of older gold and concur with other opinions that, via the photo, it looks to be gold (possibly green) and the stones are very well secured/pronged. The big question: Are there openings behind all the stones -- on the back of the piece? If so, great news. If not, not such great news. The stones might very well be small 1 to 2 point diamonds of old-cut variety.

if your getting charged to get it tested your are being ripped off!!!! just offer them to be the first one you offer to sell it too!!!

Re: Is this real gold

Yes there are openings behind all of the stones ,and there are 19 stones not 9 I will let yall know what i find out. Thanks for the help

Re: Is this real gold

Looks very nice to me, just a thought but do not tell any jeweler/whoever you found it metal detecting. Just say it was in your mom's stuff or something to that effect. Regardless of who you show it too be wary of being ripped off, it does happen. If you decide on an appraisal go only to well established jewelers and don't take first offer if you decide to sell it.

Re: Is this real gold

very nice find no matter what the outcome at the jewelers

Re: Is this real gold

My first response when I saw the size comparison was, "Holy Crap!"

But of course it's not crap.

Dude, that cross is real gold, I'll betcha.

That is one heck of a score!

I'm jealous.

That puts the silver and gold Harley Davidson ring I found yesterday to shame!

Re: Is this real gold

Several of the stones in the center look cloudy. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. There is dis-coloring on the metal just below the center cluster as well. I also see what looks like loss of plating on the left horizontal cross member. My WAG is plated.

Re: Is this real gold

open backed is often real stones -- real stones often means real gold -- thinking its a good chance its "legit" --looks custom made -- nice find anyway it goes --but if its real -- a very very nice find  :icon_thumright:
