(UPDATE 01/09/08) Hermit John's Lost Gold and a Rover's Maiden Voyage! PICS

About a week ago, I picked up a used One-Owner only driven to Church and the Grocery by a little old lady Range Rover as a Christmas Present for myself (it really is a one owner). I had been aching to give it a test drive in the High Desert.

A fellow TNetter (Ant) gave me a lead regarding a possible location for Hermit John's Lost Gold Mine. That was just the excuse I needed to hit the road!

Here are some pics of the trip:

A chimney was all that remained of this house. Found nothing but a lot of nails and garbage.

So, to sum today up: no treasures, but my Rover passed all her tests with ease (and in comfort).

Re: Hermit John's Lost Gold and a Rover's Maiden Voyage! LOTS OF PICS!

Range Rover could use some of those pics for ads. They're really good. Those promising sites and no goodies = what a bummer.

Very cool pictures. The scenery is gorgeous, the truck is awesome and you arent to bad yourself! ;) Thanks for sharing...especially as I sit here in 12 inches of snow! Wish you would have found some goodies....but maybe next time!

When I first got out there, before the sun came up, it was in the 30s. I think the warmest it got was about noon in the mid40s.

Went back out last Wednesday. Ant, I don't know who gave you that info, but it just ain't there. I drove all the way up the wash until I was blocked by the boulders around the far North Corner. I then climbed up to the top of that ridgeline, and spent as much time going vertical as horizontal, all the way back to the double mine. After about 5 hours, I gave up.

I hiked up into a steep gorge, and went about three or four miles into the deep mountains. I did find a few old timbered mines from the early 1900s:

First Mineshaft:

Gold Sulphide Vein (this is what they were after):

Second Mineshaft:

A double shaft (1) Going horizontal, and (2) going almost vertical:

CAVE IN!!! Collapsed Lower Shaft (skull added for dramatic effect ;D ):

Cool mine Mike! Did you sample the vein? Nice RR too :D

Golloum,

In the first batch of pictures, picture 6--or the sixth picture down--just below center (in the picture) there is a rock in the wash with what looks like an "X" in front of it. I know in you other posts you have stated that "X" never marks the spot--well what do you think--is it an "X"?

Bet you did not see it until I pointed it out. :)

Nice ride, great pictures.

Cool pics Mike! You are sooooo lucky to be in that area, if for nothing more than the scenery. Not a bad lookin RR either.

The area looks so promising. At least you can tell that someone spent quite a bit of time in the area and I'd just be willing to bet that they weren't doin it for their health alone. LOL

Thanks for all the great post. Hopefully, one day it will be my turn to get into one of these areas. I really appreciate your efforts regarding the safety warnings old buddy. Keep up the good work!

nice English motor mike, but watch out, it looks like a sasquatch is trying to break in in the first pic ;D ;D :D :D

One more X in the lower right area, and you have good a tic-tac-toe game.

Hey AZB,

Try this:Draw a line from the center of the two Xs. Right in the middle, just above the line is a nice heart ;)

HIO: Unfortunately gentlemen ---the "X"'s are natures work. She even makes obscenities like that hairy, unshaven, droopy socks thing with the purty Land Rover.

My poor Isuzu Trooper isn't that purty any more, but then it has been a work car not a gal catcher.

Gypsy you posted --->

"and you arent to bad yourself"

Our escape to my secluded tropical island is off !! snifff. (fickle females Humph)

Don Jose de La Mancha

Pst, wanna trade before some contrabandista steals it?

Re: (UPDATE 01/09/08) Hermit John's Lost Gold and a Rover's Maiden Voyage! PICS

Jose is correct,

The Xs you see (as well as the heart) are what we call "fortunate erosion."

I just went back out there yesterday, and when you are actually standing on top of the rocks, you can see that the Xs are just a trick of the light (nothing man made I can assure you). There are a lot of other interesting things to be found there, but those Xs aren't on the list.

Actually, the only time things start getting interesting there is after you spend several hours hiking up into the mountains. Nothing worthwhile in that area is easy to get to. I promise you.

Re: (UPDATE 01/09/08) Hermit John's Lost Gold and a Rover's Maiden Voyage! PICS

I did not really think the X I pointed out was any thing other than an illusion.

I expected a "wow did not see that--cool!" or "good eye--X still does not mark the spot"
