Up Date on "New York's Silver Bars"
The following article appeared in the New York Post September 15Th 2007:
RICHES IN ARTHUR KILL
In 1903 a barge carrying about 8,000 silver bars belonging to the Guggenheim family spilled into the Arthur Kill between Staten Island and New Jersey. The bars were being transported from the Port of New York to the Guggenheim's smelting facility in Perth. Most were recovered.
But about 1,400- each worth $6,000 to $7,000 are thought to still be buried underwater. And Aqua Survey, a Kingwood, N.J. , environmental research firm, aims to find them- by mapping the murky waters with global -positioning software, electromagnets, SONAR, and other cutting edge technology.
Last week, five members sailed out to the Story's Flats, south of Staten Island's Arthur Kill Landfill. So far, all they've come up with is a thick mud and sediment called "black mayonnaise"- but it's early, they say. AP
