This piece was found on the Mann Site in Southern Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River. I have never seen anything like it. The only reason they were able to cup out piece of flint is because the cortex on the piece was very deep which was ground out to make cup. THe piece is almost 3 in across the bottom and is 2.00 inches tall. I hope you enjoy.

Now that's really cool. I've never seen such a thing. Makes me wonder if the flintridge cores are actually attempts at making cones rather than a bi-product of lamellar flake blade production. Some cones are cupped to some degree but I'm not sure if I've ever seen on quite that deeply cupped. Also, the knapping is very cool. Thanks for the pics.

Mooch,

Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!! That is one awesome piece. Do you know of any other associations with that piece and where it was found at Mann? That certainly takes the cake for uniqueness. Hippy brings up some interesting points. I would disagree with the idea that blade cores were cone effigies. On the big Hopewell sites around here, you find bladelets in quantity that show usage wear/damage. Also, most of the cores we find are exhausted from taking off bladelets. I'm with Hippy on the deeply scooped base being highly unusual for a cone. I can think of very few that are not flat bottomed. I'm wondering if the core/cone is more of a boatstone? Maybe it was scooped out so deeply b/c the material allowed the creativity? All I know is that is one cool piece.

That thing is sweet! :icon_thumleft:

Ok that is way cool. Any chance it could have began as a geod with enough chert on the outside to knapp ?
Thanks for sharing Mooch.

I don't know of thing that it was found with, It was origianally bought at a yard sell from the finders family with the rest of the arifact collection. You have no idea how many times I've looked at this piece and thought that it took just the right piece of material to make this piece and then it had to get into the hands of a expert knapper. If he would of knock of any more flakes he would of been down into the cortex and left it uneven. There is a lot of polish on the very top of this piece also. The depth of the cup is 1.00 deep. Thanks for all of the replies on this piece. I was kinda of excited when I saw this one.
