Re: Unusual Copper Plates

I'd guess that they are plates that someone has used to practice stone setting. I've never seen one before but that's what comes to mind when I look at them. Really neat find for certain!! 2dgs

Re: Unusual Copper Plates

Hope they are real but I would guess that the copper plates are molds for making paste stones....that is to form the backs to fit into the settings.

Re: Unusual Copper Plates

It's a practice plate for stone setting. You push the graver point just hard enough and far enough to curl up a piece of metal to form a prong to hold a stone. It's a difficult skill which I never mastered. There's easier ways to mount stones nowadays.

Just received the following answer from a friend that has been in the jewelry making business for 20 years.

Tony

Tony, your friend is correct, I've made the same practice plates. You can
tell they were beginners
from the appearance of their work.

Re: Unusual Copper Plates

I brought them to the local jewelry store . She looked at them with a loupe - said they were quite interesting - never saw anything like them . I asked her if they could be practice plates for jewerly students . She said that it sounded possible , but admitted that she never went to jewelry school . She got out her LED diamond tester - she showed me how it worked on the huge rock on her finger - all the lights lit up . My little jewels ......didn't even register .....oh well !
Pretty nice lookin tester , her LED thing was cool too !

here is a similar one -

Graver and stone setter practice. Copper is cheap and so are cheap CZ's, but ya gotta learn some how before you do it on peoples rings and wedding bands.
one of my other jeweler friends had his dad start teaching him when he was 9 setting stones like that in pennies.
Practice makes perfect!
