I found this small copper (?) and mother-of-pearl (?) item on a beach in Gloucester along with a quantity of sea glass, pipe stems, silver-plated utensils, and pottery shards. The beach has been the site of several shipwrecks in the 19th century, but the area offshore has also served as a dumping ground.
This item reminds me of some form of fastener -- a button or cuff link. It seems to be copper and has a small disc of shell or mother-of-pearl, which is decayed and leaves a fine white residue when touched. It was encrusted in a rusty-colored conglomerate, but partially visible.
Please help me identify this and if possible assign a date range.
Thanks,
Jude
