Unusual circle thingie

Hey Gang, I found this round thingie in an area that has produced items from 1850 to present. It has 2 pieces, and the center piece is held with 3 tabs, which originally was 4. The outside looks brass, and the inside piece scratched a silver/gray colored metal. On the front there are 2 very slight indentations, which look deliberate. I thought it might be some type of jewelry; perhaps part of a brooch, but I don't see any place of attachment unless the pin was located on another piece that fit underneath the tabs. Tabs and jewelry don't really go together anyway. Thanks in advance for any ideas or help. Breezie

The object probably has other names, but I refer to it as a turnbuckle-latch collar. The flat projections on the back of the collar hold it onto a strap or flap of fabric or canvas or leather, which fits down over the tab-shaped part of the latch. You then turn the tab 90-degrees sideways, which "locks" it into the slight depression in the collar. Similar "turnbuckle latches" are used on women's purses. I used to own an old US Army backpack which had that kind of latch.

I agree. I have the old patent somewhere but I cant find it. I think it basically stayed the same for a long time.
