Hi gldhntr,

there is a crack (Forehead) which appears natural.
the large granite rock is approx. 4'L X 3'W X2'T, it has a smoothed perfectly flat surface
there are several lines raidiating from the bottom of the mouth area (Chin).
It is on a perfect North / South axis

hi Lynn,

I have to agree with you, wildest I've ever seen too.

fng68,

Did you find this thing??

I have saw this same photo posted on the Net a long, long, long time ago.

Trying to remember where I saw it, to see if I could pull it up again.

Colorado Bob,

I didn't discover it,but was shown it by a friend.
I first saw the rock over ten years ago, and again starting in 2004.
I took this pic in 2004.
It has been the general consensus the Indians did it.
After some research I found out, the Indians east of Mississippi
did not make totems or pics of their gods.
I am now trying to figure out if it is some sort of "sign".
I don't know an FA, if that was for me.

jbot,

Good question, I'm not sure they would have been as meticulous, if this was not a diety.
I'm still thinkin' newer origin. As I said earlier, the Indians in the Ohio Valley area didn't do
stuff like this. The near perfect alignment n/s axis,I just don't believe in coincidences.

How deep are those holes cut and are there any tool marks? Is the rock laying on the surface indicating a flat rock or is it buried up to the surrounding grade?

kenb

kenb,
The holes are all 3'' deep with not a tool mark to be seen, the base is 3' wide buried going to 2' wide at top perfectly smooth.
I really don't know how big this rock is, it could be like an iceberg mostly unseen.

Ron

Thanks Ron, round holes like that are not uncommon at all, but the square hole is a little differant. I was wondering about the iceberg thing my self thats why I asked about depth. Wish I could help, good luck figuring out your mystery.

kenb

Kenb,

What do these round holes usually denote in your experience?
Do you think this is just someone with an awful lot of stoneworking
knowledge just playing around.
That would really be strange, because one has to climb and crawl (very steep )
up a several hundred feet high hilltop to get to it.

Ron

I have know real experience in this, only what I've seen and read here. There are many posts with pics on these (round) holes and a few differant explanations. I'll locate some of these posts and put up some links for you.

Indians used to carve round holes to for grinding up grains into flower/etc.
It's possible this was used to catch water, but I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that theory. The square rock seems to be the kicker here.
I had another thought that it was a sacrificing stone, where the head would to above the 2 holes.

Have you looked around to see what else is in the area? Dig around the ground to see if you can find any other stones/etc. Also check in a broad area, 2 mile circle or so.

djui5,
Interesting thought about sacrificing stone.
I just wonder who did the sacrificing?
If it were some cult, they must be long gone.
There didn't seem to be any signs of activity.
I think the water idea is out because it has water on two sides,
a substantial year 'round creek and a good run which empties into creek.
There are no other rocks around and a stand of trees mixed in.I am going to try and make it up there
before the leaves fall soon.

Thanks,
Ron

Come On! Can't you people tell what that is? IT'S EASY!

That is the long lost center console (with cup and cell phone holder) for Fred Flintstone's Car! ;D ;D
