A buddy of mine is leasing quite a bit of land for hunting purposes. He told me that had recently torn down a barn that had been there for at least 100 years. I found a few foundations, well, etc on the property. I also found a rounded off area in between some trees and started to dig. The area ended up being a bottle/glass pit that the farmer (?) or whoever else decided to throw everything in. I only got through the first area of bottles. Most are broken, but there are QUITE a few still in tact. I took the pictures with my phone, but do you think I should go out and dig out the entire pit? It has obviously never been touched and I will be the first one to dig it. Has anyone else had any expierence in doing this? Is it worth it? Any suggestions? I can't wait to go back!

I guess what I wanted to ask is what have people found in these kinds of things? Mostly broken glass and a few in tact bottles? Just curious...I know I'm going back to dig it! I'm adding more pictures now....

I found a couple of Colgate deodorant creams (there a few more there), an odd shaped square bottom glass, a button, and a glass with shoe polish still in it! Any idea what time frame/era these things are from? I'm guessing the 1940's?

Re: found a bottle dump...pics included

anybody have any idea what kind of glass it is? How old? Any value?

Not sure if those square bottom glasses were common or not, but I've found several over the years at commercially-oriented dumpsites where other large volumes of kitchen-like items were found such as salt/pepper shakers and ketchup bottles. Might have come from a diner.

Yeah, there's probably a lot of family-oriented trash in there too, including a few buttons and compacts, maybe tobacco tins, etc..

I guess all in all its worth going back in digging everything. I'm hoping a coin or two might pop up...anybody else find anything similar to these items? I guess I should expect more of the same....

Dug lots of bottle dumps. I think we call them that because glass outlasts almost anything else regarding condition in these mixed-matrix holes.

If you've got a single family dump as the post seems to indicate there will be personal effects there also. Single family dumps can reach back several generations whereas more communal dumps are fileld quickly and need to be relocated time after time. That usually gives them more of a periodic appearance than the multi-generational family dump.

I would definitely dig it! I was metal detecting a farm and found a bottle dump (and it is huge) I dug close to 200 bottles, mostly liquor from the early twentieth century, but a few were older and some nice blue Mason jars. The dump is still opened up and I started digging it three years ago this summer. I am down about eight feet and it spans close to thirty feet across. So, yes I would definitely dig it up.

That's exactly what this is. It was an OLD farm, with several foundations. Have you found anything detecting yet? I was too busy digging up the bottles and haven't had a chance to swing the ACE yet!

Dig it for fun, not money...........

Dug a lot of these as a kid in the 50's while squirrel hunting. They used to be more of them then now, but they are still worth looking for if you like this sort of thing. Cheap entertainment.

Nice site! A trick I use to clean the inside of the bottles is to put some sand and a little dish soap and water and Shake!
