Minlab X70
I got an unpleasant surprise today. I wanted to start using prospector mode on my X70. But I didn’t know where to set the mask number for coins and jewelry. So I set out some of my wife’s jewelry to find out. I had the 9” 3K coil on. I set out three small necklaces, two were real light and thin the other much heavier, the X70 didn’t read them at all. I tried all metal and prosecuting mode.
I then put on my 5X10 18K coil, with that one if you got 1/16 inch from them they would just barely be detected in prospect mode. The heavier one was just a little better. That was in prospecting mode in all metal absolutely nothing.javascript:void(0);
With the rings it was loud in both modes.
The jewelry wasn’t expensive but even if they were made of iron they should have been picked up in all metal.

Hi GTI,

Chains are the hardest thing to hit on. Actually what most detectors hit on is the clasp, not the chain.

I have found many things that go on chains (charms, crosses and such but not the chain.

I have found really tiny gold charms deep with my 6" HF Coil, but not one chain yet.

So unless the chain is in the hole or nearby, not likely.I think it has something to do with shape and density.

You still have a really good machine, and will do well with it.

Good Luck.

Ron

PS/ If I'm understanding you right your using a Low Freq Coil. The High Freq Coil is most sensitive to your Low Conductors (GOLD)

I've found the smallest targets with my X70. Sometimes it amazes me. And I've found larger targets that were so deep I got tired of digging.
I just wanted to mess around with the prospecting mode so I used the coil I had on my X70, which was the 9" 3.5K. Then when I couldn't detect the jewelry I changed to the 5X10 18.5K coil as it is sensitive to gold.
Thanks for the explanation. My son has a Whites XLT I'm going to see what that will do. I agree with you The X70 is a great detector. I have had the X70 for about two years now, and have found some nice targets. Yesterday I found a sterling silver bracelet. I like hunting the old stuff though.

I REALLY like your picture of the flag.

go often and keep digging

Here's something to remember regarding frequencys:
Low freq good for high conductors (i.e. copper, silver)
High Freq good for low conductors (i.e. gold, nickel)
