unmarked 14k pin/pendant

found this for a quarter in a box of jewelery, found some other nice stuff in the same box too, a margot de taxco pin, some sterling backed cz earrings, sterling backed earrings with look like a semi translucent moonstone.
completely unmarked, except for the actual pin, it is 14K gold, looks like silver dot in the center. Guessing it is pretty old.


any know anything about the pin ?

Victorian era. Looks like maybe it's for pinning a little ladies pendant watch or a locket went with it. ?

Yes, now that you mention it, I believe it is. I assumed a little ball of sterling, but under good lighting and and magnification it appears to be a pearl, and looks to be a natural/non-cultured pearl at that. Black looks to be enamel

As previously noted it is a pendant pin for a ladies watch. Probably a mourning one at that.

Thank you all, I didn't even look that close when I grabbed it, just saw the color and the amount of detail, and for a quarter I grabbed it. Was a hectic sale and I was in grab and get out of there mode.

I agree. The catch wasn't invented until around 1910 though. So it'd date to the very end of the Victorian era. The tube hinge is of an older design. Is there any evidence of the catch being repaired/replaced? Hard to tell in photo, doesn't look gold (the catch). It's a nice piece. Glad someone already pointed out the center was a pearl.

The pin and the catch are not gold, as far as repairs, I would say, yes, it probably was repaired at some point, and they didn't do a very pretty job of it.

I cannot believe it ! I never buy jewelry jars, but tonight I saw one that had a couple small native pieces in it, and I had a gut feeling I shoukd get it. it was $20... Of all the things.. guess what was in the jar.. This was about a mile from the yard sale where I picked up the pin






so now... i am even more confused haha

In the end there was some change, silver, and another 14K and pearl earring.

I looked through their jewelery pretty close, did not see them, I am thinking they found them later or didnt put them out because the back was bent. But I did see other stuff from the sale there as well, so they did donate stuff after.

Also, the Margot de Taxco pin is worth some money, too.

The second identical pin I have found, I think I got $50 for the last one a couple years ago.

Thats a nice piece. But id look at that margot taxco piece. Is it the bird? Because some of those pieces are worth a fortune. I found a necklace at a flea market and paid almost 3 months rent from it. The gold seems to be a hard sell over spot unless you can find the right buyer. But honestly I think silver is where the money is at if you can find the right makers and buyers

It is the bird, it is enamel on sterling, quite small, about the size of a dime. I see others sold around $45 on ebay,so i put it up for $60 and will see what happens. As far as gold have had had almost no luck above spot price. hopefully this pin and earrings will break that streak.

I've noticed that also, but gold thimbles sell way over spot. I found one in a bunch of thimbles being all sold for 3 bucks each. It was marked 14K way up under the top. I'm thinking the seller thought it was brass.
I knew it didn't look like brass when I spotted it.

i have never found a gold thimble, done pretty well with a few silver ones. Once I found a silver set of thimble, scissors, needle threader, needle case, and sterling base pin cushion. That was a very very nice payday.
