Unknown trade token, and a weird & ugly silver ring!

Hello!

I got out detecting today for a couple hours after work. I went back to an area that's been hit pretty hard over the last few years, but I'm still getting lucky and finding a few more goodies! I dug 9 wheat cents and some clad . . . . . but the 'highlights' are this ugly and weird looking silver ring, and a trade token! The ring isn't marked, but it's obviously silver, and it weights 5.4 grams. And the trade token is a Maverick token ~ unknown city and unknown state! The front reads, BODDY & KUTHE ~ and the back side reads, GOOD FOR 5 IN TRADE. The token is made of copper/bronze, and is about 20 millimeters in diameter.

The token is listed at Richard Greever's website THE TOKEN DATABASE (www.tokencatalog.com) ~ but the token's origin is unknown. He had it's info listed, but I added the images of my token to his website just moment ago.

I wonder how I could do more search on the token?

Thanks for looking!
Neil

YEAH ~ I KNOW ~ RIGHT?!!

The top is just a big cube of silver. . . . . . no engraving or anything! UGLY!!!

bleck. dude, you aint kidding. that ring is f word ugly. Who on earth would make that? And out of silver? shame shame.
If I found that, it would be chucked into the foundry and melted down to make a better ring.

That token is interesting. Finding out its origin could be loads of fun.

I agree, and because of that I love tokens! I agree that ring if that is indeed what it is is Pure Ugly.
Got a couple of mysteries on your hands and just in time to keep you busy in the non- detecting sways of winter.
WTG!

"UGLY" isn't even the appropriate
word to describe that ring Neil!! :laughing9:
Wonder why someone would even take the
time to fashion something like that...let alone
wear it!! Could be that's why you found it.
Nice token.... Gold Nuggets :hello:

He's the one who found a same token and may be of assistance to you.
Don...

I e-mailed him ~ he still knows nothing about the token. He actually didn't find his ~ he bought his. Mystery remains!

I think your ring may be much older than you think. The style of design, and the lack of markings all scream 100+ years old to me. Is the top of it solid, one piece? Any design on the top?

I tried to track that token but this possibility is all I have so far-

In circa 1908/1909 (article 11/7/1909 Oregonian) W. E. Boddy was arrested for selling "near beer" in Eugene.

Around the same time (article 11/17/1908 Oregonian) Charles F. Kuthe had also been arrested for selling "near beer" in Eugene.

Yeah ~ I assume it's a little older too. It was pretty deep ~ it was much deeper than the 1940's wheat cents that I dug in the same strip of lawn yesterday.

There's no markings nor design of any kind. I think the cube part is solid, and the band part is kinda thin. Weights 5.4 grams.

Love those "Good For" tokens! :icon_thumleft: I think that silver ring was worn with a pair of brass knuckles, I'd hate to get whacked by a fist wearing that weird ring!

Re: Unknown trade token, and a weird & ugly silver ring!

The ring bears some similarity to the 1700s brass ring recently posted in "Today's Finds."
