Mom took this picture out East of Madras OR and was asking me if I had any idea what it was. They could not see any road or anything approaching it from below. Grandma thought it might be some way of storing water but we are really at a loss. There are three photos at varying distances. Thought someone might have an idea. Thanks!!

Hiya Cyn...

How tall is that building? What kind of property is it on?

It would probebly relate to whatever was happening there when it was built... for example, if there was mining it may have held explosives given it's location against the rock face. Or, maybe inside that shed is a mineshaft enterence? Possibly a simple range shelter for ranchers? Or for storing small amounts of equipment for a rancher in a remote location? Or to simply store some cattle feed.

No matter what those are some nice pictures... :)

I was thinking the same, except at least here Dynamite sheds
are Rock or Brick depending on age.

It Resembles A Black smith Shop, I'm aware of.

But Shape dosn't say anything

I sent mom an email asking her if she could look at your questions and either register and answer them or tell me how to answer them! lol Hopefully I will get back to you later this morning! You guys are great!

Given the location it could easily be a maintenance/storage shed.

Or....the above stuff and a stairway from the bottom of the ledge to the upper level? :-\

Mom says this is in an area where there is dryland wheat farming, ranching AND mining. It is approx the size of a 2 car garage and equivalent to two stories tall. It is east of Ashwood near Antelope toward the John Day River near a mine she thinks was called Wildhorse Mine. There are some buildings I had pictures of in My Daily Snapshot that are in the same area, within eyesight of this structure. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,98854.0.html

There is always a shortage of water in that area so maybe it is a spring house or wellhouse and would have a pump and storage tank inside. With the cement foundation it was planned for long term use and there may have been an homestead near by anyway a great looking area to do some relic hunting. great pics Cynangyl.

Grainary? Grain could have been hauled and dumped in from the top. The design is very similar to ones I've seen elsewhere, but none next to a bluff.

Housing a cistern, wellhouse would be another probable. The inside design would tell alot.

Mom has apparently been reading your responses because she just emailed me saying.....

The only problem with it being a storage place is that the lower level does not have any entrance into it for storing machinary or for people to use as a shelter. I can see it being a dyamite shed with stairs down into it from the top.....That one was a good one I think

Sure would be cool if we could look inside! hehe :D

If it was in Pennsylvania or New York I'd say it was a tipple. Is there a big hole in front of it on the upper level?

Load the ore/coal, etc. at the top and gravity takes it down through sorting grates into different hoppers. Carts/trucks carry out the material at the lower base from the hoppers.

Heck. You're there and have the best access to find out what it is. Walk over and peek in.

Tipple sounds correct, but you never know. Look for stuff around it, and that should help.
Ore shed? Also check the surrounding area for about 300 ft. you may find the camp site or sites where the workers lived, now theres the treasure. I'd say the foundation was built in the 40's or 50's
Dano & Yogi.

PS is there a creek near by? Check along there.

the only thing that does not work regarding a tipple is that there is no access from the lower floor going in or out, just solid walls. Mom thought the dynomite storage area would be a good guess as it would make sense on a safety line of thought to have the access from the top and have to go down to get the explosives rather than being easy access from outside...she also wondered if maybe inside the building was an opening into a mine shaft. It is on private property so I am not sure it would be welcomed to go peek inside or I just might! ;)

not sure what to call it but what if rainwater from the plateu above drains to it and it collects in there?

something to do with the mines might be over an abandoned entrance
