UPDATE ON THIS ITEM!!! PLEASE READ!!!
I found this item many years ago and I have no idea at all what it is. The measurements are as follows: 3 1/4 inches long, about 1 inch in diameter, and its weight is a little over 2 oz. It appears to be made of copper with a seam where the tip joins the main body. There is also a large ring near the base. It appears to be hollow but may not be empty. I guess the main question is, 'Is it safe?' Any help on this item would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time here and my first post. Thanks for you help.
UPDATE: Thank you all for your responses about my Unknown Item they were very informative to be sure. I have been told by at least one of your posts that it was a 20mm explosive round and that scared me to say the least. I have asked two other former military men their thoughts and they agreed! At the moment I'm waiting for the EOD to come and remove the round for proper disposal. I'll let you know eventually if it was a dud or not. The policeman who ID'd it thought that there might be a charge still in there between the ring and the tip of the projectile. Anyway, it will soon be on its way to a disposal site. Whatever you guys do with stuff like this... be careful!!! Thanks again for your responses, this site does work!!!

Welcome to treasurenet circa42!

If you mean by "safe", is it ammunition or something... I think your safe.

And dugfinds is right, looks like a lipstick applicator or a mini something or other. Have you tried to take it apart?

See what's inside! Gunpowder? Lipstick? Batteries?

Thanks for the replys. Not knowing what's inside has kept me from tampering with it. But, I may have to give it a try.

Truthfully... I do NOT think it's any type of ordinance.

I'd be kinda careful, but I'd also open it if it's able to be...

Note: see disclaimer under the avatar

You never know what kind of smells are going to come out of that thing, I would open it in the garage...

LOL! batteries? ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.If you find those inside,I guess that would make it a womans handbag object eh? ;D .Sorry circa42,it's been a long day.Welcome to the forum and i'm looking forward to seeing what this is.It sounds a little big for a lipstick tube and a little small for the other unmentionable item, unless of course........no nevermind! Scratch that thought! :o I agree with Montana Jim,I don't believe it's any type of ordinance.

Welcome to TNet. It's great to have you join us!

If you are concerned about it possibly being shell of some type , I believe soaking it in water for awhile might lessen the chances of explosion. (I hope the experts here will chime in on my statement.)

Of course, that wouldn't be a safe bet if the thing was full of plastic explosives.....

RUN! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!! LOL - Sorry, just joking.

For some odd reason it just seems to be Plumbing related to me.

Open it at your own risk. There's a lot of jokesters here so don't believe everything they say about being safe. I've lost an arm and a leg listening to these &(_+(*&())S!

The battery operated theory was the first thing that went through my mind but with only a length of 3 1/2" backed by the 1" diameter it wouldn't have been very popular in this part of the country. Appears to be to large for a lipstick tube. Does the base appear to be threaded into the body??

I can't tell if the base is threaded or not, it seems to have been inserted and secured in some way. But, thanks to all for the replys. If, and when, I get it opened I'll let you know what it contains.

20MM cannon projectile! Don't do ANYTHING with it! Explosive and detonator in it! I have one just like it but mine is disarmed.I did not disarm it,too dangerous!

I was thinking Hotchkiss (as used at Wounded Knee) or Krupp 1" breechloading cannon, but wasn't sure. There's also the Maxim-Nordenfeldt that fired a one pound high explosive shell. Looks like a driving band/gass seal at the base end but the nose isn't right for a 20mm is it? Bad news is the shells were HE - high explosive - and playing with old TNT or Torpex is not recommended.

Treat it gentle until you do find out.

Maybe it is something that was meant to resemble a piece of ordnance just as things today are made to resemble other things. Ever see those keychains with the Winchester "cartridge" on them? Or ever see the fake handgrenades that can be purchased at novelty stores? Maybe this thing is one of those mimics, and its real intention was as a needle case or a match safe or a coin holder?
