Unknown object. Possibly a piece of a hairpin? Ideas?

Found this today at a late 1700's - 1800's site. I didn't find anything modern here at all. Looks like it may be half of a hair pin but thats a complete guess. Anybody have any ideas? I threw a penny in for size comparison.
