Hello everyone,

I found this today at one of my favorite Civil War sites. It's 6 inches in length and about an inch wide. The socket-looking end looks like it is made of copper, while the rest appears to be iron or steel. The socket is hollow. I dug it at the same depth at which I've found musketballs and Minie balls, so it might be old, but I have no idea what it could be.

I also found a wheat penny and .58 musketball today, which I've included for visual scale.

Thank you all for any ideas!

A candle holder is what I am thinking. Are there any holes in the iron that screws could have gone through?

Looks to me like it is from a long handled shoe horn. Cool find.

Shoe Horn was the first thing that came to my mine from the picture.

I think this may be it;
Austrian Lorenz Bayonet Intrenching Tool - Scarce find today, bayonet fashioned into a working intrenching tool when attached or fixed to the musket. Post civil war wood handle added for garden or farm tool, note the old square head nail. Wood handle is 39" long, has many cracks from storage & age. There is no question the handle was added shortly after the war. Socket spade is 1" wide, 5 1/2" long overall, scarce relic here. - Price is $ 285.00 plus shipping and insurance. Item - R-50-1274

Thank you all for your replies! fyrffytr1, I don't see any holes in the iron, but it looks like it could be a candle holder. It does also look similar to a shoe horn - thank you Goldiver and tamrock. Fowledup, you've got me excited with that link! I hope that's what it is but it definitely looks way too flimsy to have been used for any entrenching, and the part where it would join onto a shaft of a rifle or stick is pretty different. I'll keep looking - but thank you all so much for the ideas!
