Found this in Columbus New Mexico yesterday. I don't know what it is. I've found lots of military buttons in the past but this one is different, it has no pin or shank in the back. It has a serial number underneath U.S. of some sort, 24C41 and cross riffles on the bottom. It's the same thing on the other side. Any help identifying it is greatly appreciated. This is also the place where Pancho Villa raided the town in 1916, which was garrisoned by the 13th Cavalry Regiment and pursued into Mexico by Brigadier General John Pershing.

Looks a lot like an ID disc that was attached to a Pre-WWI Mills cartridge belt, but those are single sided... Is it two of them stuck together?

Compare to #14 here: http://www.mcpheetersantiquemilitaria.com/05_accoutrements/05_item_084.htm

Updated: Actually post WWI seems to be more correct for the things I'm referring to, which are the M1919 Equipment marking discs.

It's a WW1 haversack pin. The find that got me hooked was one. I have since collected these and have not seen another dug other than mine. Mine came from the WW1 camp, Camp Wadsworth. image-3931931155.jpg

not sure about taking them apart, could we get an edge shots to see
how tight the disks in the middle are, im thinking that the middle disks
prongs must be gone or really flat, also thinking, if you try to straighten
the visible prongs, they prob will break off if you totally try to straighten
them flat, maybe the prongs could be bent to the straight up position
and not break off, that might allow you to pull them apart
