Unknown item found at old homesite

My buddy Steve found this item at an old homesite. He's not sure of the age or the ID and neither am I so I thought I would post it here. Any ideas? It looks like a decorative piece of some sort.

Either a doorknob coverplate or a doorbell coverplate. Hope it helps.

I think its a drawer pull (missing the ring) or a toggle switchplate

WAG...doorbell coverplate

This would be my guess, too. The small holes, one at the top the other at the bottom for mounting nails and the large squared hole for the push-pull shaft for the mechanical doorbell ringer. The bells were located on the inside of the door directly opposite that plate.

And of course, I COULD be wrong.

I can't find the exact one but it is a drawer pull backing plate from a bureau or chest of drawers.

I am going to stay with drawerpull /cabinet thumb latch....because....it looks too flimsy to be used as a backplate for a doorbell.....most doorbells had round openings,unless you are talking about chimebells or twist ringers...even so again its flimsy.....pictured below is a chimebell
