Yeah, my money is on "Victorian Door Ornament."

WAG...doorbell coverplate

This would be my guess, too. The small holes, one at the top the other at the bottom for mounting nails and the large squared hole for the push-pull shaft for the mechanical doorbell ringer. The bells were located on the inside of the door directly opposite that plate.

And of course, I COULD be wrong. ::)

I am going to stay with drawerpull /cabinet thumb latch....because....it looks too flimsy to be used as a backplate for a doorbell.....most doorbells had round openings, unless you are talking about chimebells or twist ringers...even so again its flimsy.....pictured below is a chimebell

Mallory Wheeler Co made alot of victorian door hardware and has a great website...They also had several Roman or Greek Warrior lines... http://gallery.webwilson.com/thumbnails.php?album=16&page=1
