Unknown Iron or steel "thing"

I found this at a North Mississippi 1849 homesite. It was found amongst a TON of other iron junk (175 individual pieces of metal in a 10' X 10' square). It is 3" tall, 2 5/8" Dia. and the raised square on top is 1" across flats. It resembles the cap for an oxygen or other gas bottle, but is smaller and heavier. Any ideas? Among the other junk found with it were plenty of old rusted bolts and nuts, barb wire pieces, nails... etc...
Thank you for looking.
Joe
