Hi everyone, I am relatively new to metal detecting. Yesterday I found these two items I am having trouble identifying. The ball is 152.2 grams, and about 1.3 inches wide. This was found about 5 inches deep at a home that used to be a tavern built in 1780. The iron plate seems to have 4 legs pounded out amd was about 11 inches deep in a cornfield. Any help you can provide in identifying these is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Years ago they use to have bowling type of games where you shot a bearing ball like what you have with a spring plunger. Some called it pin ball.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Stuinguphistory! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

Is there a casting line on it?

First thing that comes to mind is a windmill check valve ball.

I was going to say a check valve ball as well. Could also be a pinball. you are not saying how big your plate is. It looks like a square fence post cap to me But only of it is small 2x2 to 4x4 inch

Welcome to Tnet Stu, thanks for posting! :occasion14:
Your metal ball looks to be made of brass due to the amount of verdigris present. It also looks to originally have been chrome plated, so it's likely a 'modern loss'.

You didn't offer the dimensions of your metal plate, to me it looks like plow hardware. :icon_scratch:
