I have no idea what this coin is. I found it at an 1840's home site. It might be impossible for anyone to identify from photos (I can't determine any markings, the edges are rough), but I know there are a lot of experts who are on this site, so I figured I'd post it. If you have an guesses let me know before I take it down to the guy at the coin shop and let him take a stab at it.

Well, I definitely think I can see a head in the first image. Maybe it is just a heavily corroded Roosevelt. I've seen them get into that sort of condition before and become nearly unidentifiable. I'm really not an expert, though, so I can't say with certainty. Do you think it is a pure metal, or an alloy? It could also be a steel penny.

Looks like it has stars around the outside

Maybe it's just an optical illusion or the angle of the photo, but, it looks a bit bigger than a dime. If so, It's probably a foreign coin.

Turn the first pic 90 degrees clockwise and you'll be looking at what I believe is a silver Roosevelt dime. The neck line is clearly visible. Dropping it on the counter, does it sound like a silver coin? I'll bet it does.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it was a three cent silver?
