My neighbors asked me to identify this. They are very old. When they were young they were poking around ancient ruins at the northeast corner of Spain and kicked this up out of the dirt. I posted this a couple of years ago but received very little response, so, I thought I would try again since many of you are now snowed in and have little else to do.

Thanks in advance

Tom

Re: Unknown coin/token/jeton - European

German Jetton/Jeton circa 1850s most likely produced by Ludwig Laucer in Kleinweidenmuhle. If its not him its definately 19th Century German.

Diademed Head Right.

Mercury wearing winged helmet & holding caduceus

The marks are not original to the coin. I've had a couple of these in the past and they seem earlier than 1850s, at least to me. But being foreign who knows. (and there's no debate if you know the bust)

I think they are neat.

Agreed the letters & no.s looked added later.

1850s is when this reverse type was popular, can't find an exact match in my Jetton book, but its elements are consistant with a 19th C types than the earlier ones.

It might be listed as unattributed/unknown. Kinda rings a little bell with me but can't say for certain if I read it, or just thought it.

Keep thinking Iron Patch. Thanks Crusader. Don't ask me why but I was thinking French. The Napoleonesque look (but not Napoleon) to the gentleman and the light and airey almost Roman look to Mercury. Looked more Latin than Teutonic. Interesting nonetheless.

Don't assume anything by the images on the Jettons. It only helps to a small degree. The images on these we copied all around Europe. Some of the French are indeed similar to the German, so its a possibility. I narrowed it down a bit based on probability as well as type. I'm conformable that its German.

....and they seemed to cross countries like crazy. It's not uncommon for a French coin dealer to have German Jetons for sale. I usually know a Jeton to see one, but have never paid close enough to attention to see it and know French or German right away. Many unique designs and won't break the budget unless your taste is for high grade examples. If I continued on coin collecting from maybe 5 years ago I'd definitely have some nice ones in my collection. I also would have kept the high grade example for the one in question in this thread.

CRU.. These are smaller than the common largers Jetons, about Farthing in size I guess.

OK, that size fits with the later types (although smaller earlier ones do exsist). This one I guess is slightly thicker than the usual medieval types (only a fraction thicker)

Actually quite a bit thicker if you're thinking of the same ones I am... which are often bright yellow brass. This one is thicker like a copper coin, not a thin brass token... and you know, now that I think about the color I'm pretty sure they are copper.
