I dug this today in Central Virginia out of a Union camp. It is made of lead. It is about 1.5" wide, 1.5" tall and generally rounded with a flattened base. There looks to be a carved slot in the top. First thing I thought was an artillery fuse. Second though was a lead box. Third guess is simply a camp carving of a faux box. I do not think it coms apart. Ideas?

I saw something similar a while back that was identified as a lead munitions seal. However, I can't find anything on the net to substantiate that theory.

It just may be that he was starting to make a nipple protector out of a bullet. Just a guess mind you.

This thing weighs about 5-6 ounces. It's large and heavy. MUCH bigger than one of those Arkansas hog bullets.
