Hi guys,

Can anyone kindly id this four character marking or point me in the right direction please. It is encircled in green on the base of this lovely old porcelain tea pot. It also has a scratched marking which appears on the base of the lid as well.

Warmest regards.

Those look like they're possibly Korean. I'm no expert but I don't think the circles aren't typically found in Chinese characters.

It wasn't easy, but I have your answer.

First, rotate the markings about 180 degrees from how you have them in the picture. It's basically upside down. Now, from top to bottom, right to left (as it is read in Chinese), you have "启新磁廠", which in English roughly means Qixin Porcelain Factory. If you run a Google Search for the Chinese characters I pasted there, you will find plenty of information on it. But to summarize, your pot was made in Tangshan, China, after 1914 and before 1959, for a foreign market (probably Europe).

Here is a great website giving a lot of information in English.
Republican Tangshan Ceramics

I don't normally say this, but I want you to know.. I spent an outrageous amount of time trying to figure this one out.. because I actually can't even read Chinese. If ever we meet, you owe me a cup of tea.
