Possibly a 50-70 Case there. Its hard for me to tell actually, but all the 50-70's Ive dug did not have the internal Benet priming system which I see.The Benet priming system was manufactured by Frankford Arsenal, and where copper and had a copper cup internal primaer that was held in place by being crimped about a 1/4 inch above the base of the cartridge.
Now headstamps are not found on cartridges before March 1877 (and I see yours does not have one) with the exception of the headstamped "US CARBINE" whch was made for a very short time in 1874.
Ok! lets see what else. The .50 cal conversions where not manufactured until 1874,so your saying yours is larger cool! now we know yours dates from lets say 1866 to 1874,so I think we can say yours is a .58 cal conversion.Cartridges which do not bear a headstamp may be of civilian or government production.
Anyhow its hard for me to tell what yours is and I wish I could be of more help as Im a die hard cartridge collector.Persoanlly I like to collect them from 1874-1886,but I have a few from the Civil War I dug.Whatever you have I still like it and its still an early cartridge that dates from 1866-1874.
Nice going,I just wish it had a headstamp where I could help out more.Daniel

From comparing your case to the ruler, I think it is a Benet primed 50-70 case. The length and diameter look right. The Allen conversion .58 cartridge had a case only 1 3/16" long.
Your find looks just like one I found a few years ago,an Indian war relic.
