This sold brass whatzit came from a mid to late 19th century site. It is about 4 inches across, and has holes in three places, and the remains of a spring in the center, notice rusty area, but the rest is heavy brass. Thanks for looking. IMG_1058.webp

Hmmm... That's different...

Can we get a pic of the other side and a couple additional angles?

I know you mention the size but it is much easier for our brains to grasp if there is a common item in the picture - like a soda or beer can or a dollar bill.

Also, if can put a pencil thru the holes that may help us understand the size.

Makes me think of a motor pivot bracket for something belt driven... Too small for a table saw, maybe something like an old sewing machine with an exterior motor. But I can't think of an application that would need it to be made of brass.

The new pics are really good! I wish I could say that they really help me with the ID... :icon_scratch:

It is a lot smaller that I first thought.

Possible part of an insulator/wire guide from an early telephone system or electrical wiring? I'm picturing it mounted on a pole or the rafters of a house with a shaft running through the holes holding ceramic insulators.

I was thinking parts of a self closing gate hinge, or a gopher trap, but the brass kinda throws that off.
