Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
I found this in a small (25' x 50') area where I've found CW officer belt buckles, bullets, casings, slave shackles and a ton of iron spike nails. My MD buddy thinks it is from an old lathe because of the wheel bearings. I think it is an old oar holder for a boat, or some kind of cannon/gun rest. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I registered to this forum so I can get help with this (i've been reading it for a couple years though)!

Location is in Tampa FL. 2 miles from Macdill AFB, 1 mile from the port of Tampa, 1/4 mile from Hillsborough River, and 1/2 mile from Lowry Park (documented location of Andrew Jackson and Teddy Rossevelt army camps).

It's definitely a clasp of some kind

Clasp hmm... There aren't holes at the tips for any type of a latch though. I'm sorry the pic quality is not good. I don't have a good camera, my phone is an old flip kind. I'll try to take a better one.

Interesting piece. Are there any mounting holes on the base? Only CW artifacts found with it?

Better pics would make ID easier. Take them in sunlight with a dark background.

DCmatt there are mounting holes in the base. I refuse to scrape at it to find markings, it is in very good condition despite being over 1 foot in the ground. I don't want to ruin the petina.

At the depth I found it it is pretty consistent that i find hand forged iron objects along with better relics buck.webp(belt buckles, bullets ect.) Anything above 6" is pulltabs and coins no older than the 1960's

Looks like one end of a pipe roller for threading or some other type of manf.

liftloop the whole unit is completely solid except for the wheel bearings. I totally see what you are talking about though. It is solid brass with 2 wheel bearings that are attached with rivets. I'm laughing because I have showed this to everyone I know and I get a different hypothesis from every person as to what this darn thing is. I mean zero offense in correcting your idea. As with all artifacts, it is one of those objects you have to hold in your hand. If it helps, it weighs 6.53 oz.

Can you see any wear or scratches where something would have rolled in the piece and left marks?

victorvincimus no scratches but now that you mention it the wheel bearings are very worn and smoothed on along the rim. they don't quite have the greenish / brown petina as the rest of the piece.

I think this is a pipe cutter with either: a) very worn cutting discs (wheels) or b) the rollers that go opposite of the cutting wheels which are on the complementary (missing) piece of the tool. The rollers/wheels don't have the patina of the brass portion because they are steel rather than brass.
Are the centers of the working area of the wheels a bit taller than the outer portion of the working area of them? (It's hard to tell in the photos)

Or, as Dennco suggested, a pipe support for a pipe threading set-up.

The pics are a little blurry. Is it possible to post some really clear ones?

The wheels are completely flat like a car tire. They show no sign of it being a cutting wheel that is worn flat, no sign of a bevel, they look like bearings, not cutting wheels. Standby for more pics. My girlfriend is on her way over with a digital camera right now.
