Re: Unknown Barrel band?

Nice piece kuger :icon_thumright: I think the 'A' was a misstrike double stamped. No clue on musket but want to tag along for the ID.

Re: Unknown Barrel band?

Sorry Jim,here is another angle.I was looking at the .72 Prussian Rifle, and it has a very similiar band but I dont know??The site at which I dug it was active from the late 1860's -1890's.I dont think it like either of those as it is brass?

Re: Unknown Barrel band?

I thought I had it narrowed down but the more I look the more I see with the same style brass band???The 1840 Mississippi is very close,so is the Prussian .72 .

Re: Unknown Barrel band?

I believe your barrel band is from an 1808 U.S. Contract Musket. These .69 cal
muskets were built buy many different contractors. Each had three barrel bands. Yours looks like the rear band which slopes forward on all of them. I can't find a good close up.....i have used a magnifier. Here's a couple examples.....

During 1808-1810 the were nineteen different Contractors building these. The price per weapon to the Government was $10.75 ea. I haven't figured out which one stamped their parts with an "A"......yet.

I think these would of been used in the War of 1812.

Was wondering which position band it was. I think this is very close. Almost look like 'triple stamped' A.

Re: Unknown Barrel band?

It is not the 1808, if you look the 1808 has the barrel to stock contour on the outside of the band, the one in question is rounded all the way around on the outside. Also I believe the 1808 is steel, not brass. It is just about certainly from a foreign made musket, but there are so many it would be difficult to pin it down.
