Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

pretty rare here, but it does happen from time to time :icon_thumright:

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

That button is a nice find, but what does the face look like? It looks as though that button was ripped off the shirt in a fight to still have that much cloth remaining.

is it cloth or really ropey thread :dontknow:

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Acutally I have found several over the years, including one or two this year. Here is an 1750-1790 era Tombac type button I found and posted here in May this year. I know of others who have found some also on this forum.

It does make the find much more interesting and hope it does not fall apart on you. The thread/rope on this Tombac survived the Peroxide cleaning and actually came out of it clean. :)

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Interesting. The thread is rope like CRU. Fortunately this new site has never been fertilized....Chemicly. As far as the face goes, It's just a plain cuff...Excellent photos Don

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Yes, once in a while but not often. My rarest is probably a mostly intact wood back.

:hello:

Interesting attachment on the button, one I posted outher day also has interesting attachment :icon_scratch: looks like a iron loop through the fixing shank, I'm leaning towards Medieval for this one because of this :help:

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Here is a late 18th century button I found a few years back with the thread still attached. I recently checked my collection, and the thread came loose!

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Wonderful scan Don of the weave of the fibers after they were cleaned. Were these flax perhaps? 4-H, it would be fun to see your fibers close up if you decide to do the peroxide treatment also and see how they might compare, as your's would be probably 20 to 30 years later.

Re: Unique 1800's cuff button

Let me add to this thread..........
Great button find indeed 4-H! :icon_thumleft:

Don,
Those are some fantastic close-up shots of yours too. :icon_thumleft:

That button is definately 17th Century, never seen to iron extra bit :icon_thumright:
The fixings date range is 15th-17th Century, which is Medieval to Post Medieval, so either of us could be right or wrong :read2:

agreed, it was the fixing I was basing it on, without the front, it was a best guess :icon_thumright:

Perhaps it is more likely that the fibers were hemp--seriously. :)
