Hi, I'm posting this for a guy I work with. Non-Dug. It's the size of a small cent. He would like to know What it is and approximate value. He's probably going to sell it. Thanks much, BB

Re: Union Token

Good one! :icon_thumright:

It's a patriotic Civil War token. Due to wartime hoarding, there was often a shortage of coins, and many merchants turned to tokens as a way to facilitate trade. Some had their own tokens or "store cards," custom-struck with their name, address, message, etc. Many, however, opted for less expensive "stock" (generic) tokens like the one you found. These were generally valued at 1¢, and in fact quite a few imitated the design of Indian Head cents.

This particular token appears to be the variety cataloged as #236/426 (obverse/reverse die designs) in Fuld's Patriotic Civil War Tokens. It was also struck in brass and in silver-plated copper. The copper and silver-plated varieties are rated R-1 (more than 5,000 known); the brass variety, R-7 (11-20 known).

Kanzinger's price guide lists the copper variety at $12, Fine to Very Fine. Rulau values it at $6 in Very Good condition; Very Fine, $12.
