Finally got out of the house to do some digging. Some people gave me permission to dig at an 1863 Union Camp sight in Culpeper, Va. Turns out their great grandmother lived on the sight and said it extended about a mile back from her house. She knitted wool socks for them at 50 cents apiece. They just cleared two lots to build a house for their grand daughter. Unfortunately, it was really muddy as it snowed two days ago. Also only a small portion was cleared, the rest still had the trees that they had bulldozed. Will try to get back when it is dryer and the trees are gone. Although the folks have found belt buckles, button, bullets on the site. I was not so lucky today but did fine a lot. Found tons of shards of dishes and cups and salt washed stoneware jugs. Also a type of ax or hoe and a kettle top. The top is 11" wide and has a No. 8?6 on the top. Also lots of mason jar ceramic lids. There was also a saddle shaped piece of metal with a hole in the middle and I have no idea what it is? It's about 5 " long and shaped like an old shoe horn. Anyway, if anyone can help with the Id's and age I would appreciate it. Hopefully will get some CW items next time.
