Unidentified round copper (?) Coin?

The exact diameter of a us nickel. Thin, about that of a dime.
One side seems worn nearly thin.
The other, can make out a rim, stars surrounding it, possibly the letters ED along the star rim, that's about it. Any ideas what it could me? Dug in central va. Was thinking a coin or button but I don't see any place for the shank.

I'm with iron patch on this one. bringing up the third pic to a close up, it looks like a button back mark. looks like I can kinda make out the word 'treble' as in 'treble gilt' at the two o'clock position
