Re: Unidentified rocks

First of all where did the bucket of dirt come from?
(actual place where the dirt is from)

Test for hardness and specific gravity.

If that is impossible, take them to a local college or university geology department
they can sot them out for you.

Re: Unidentified rocks

Looks like what comes out of North Carolina buckets. The top one is amethyst. The one on the left looks like crabtree emerald. The one on the right looks like aventurine. Not sure about the bottom one. Hope that helps ya a little.

Re: Unidentified rocks

The purple one is amethyst and the green ones emeralds more than likely from Brazil. The buckets are "salted" with imported rejected gem stones.

You can do a search on ebay or other sites under gem roughs and you should be able to compare your finds.

Re: Unidentified rocks

Yeah, I come across the same problem - identifying rocks.
It really pays to get a rock & mineral book.

My guess: I agree with above.
Top one probably amethyst (quartz with purple magnesium).
Right I would guess green quartz.
Left (don't know) I'd guess emerald too.
Bottom - could be anything with iron in it - most likely magnetite.
